About Dr. Fuhrmann

Welcome to the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University!

Dr. Sven Fuhrmann is an Associate Professor of Geovisualization and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University. He received his Ph.D. in geoinformatics from the Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster, Germany in 2002. Dr. Fuhrmann has over 15 years of experience in GIScience and Geovisualization, bridging cutting-edge research developments in the United States and Europe. He is an established member in national and international commissions that are concerned with developing geospatial research agendas and novel research strategies. His research interests include

  • geovisualization and human-computer interaction,
  • social media and cartography,
  • geovisualization-based spatial learning and thinking, and
  • art in cartography.

Dr. Fuhrmann joined the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University in the fall of 2014. Having been appointed at several national and international academic institutions, Mason clearly stands out as an incubator for research innovation and teaching excellence in the field of geoinformation science and geovisualization research.
